    Ingredients

    • 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
    • 3 Cups apples (cored, peeled and roughly chopped)
    • 1 Cup water
    • 1 Cup sugar
    • ¼ Teaspoon cinnamon
    • ¼ Teaspoon nutmeg
    • ¼ Teaspoon cloves
    • ¼ Teaspoon salt
    • ¼ Cup cornstarch
    • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract

    Note

This homemade apple pie filling can be prepared ahead of time and frozen.  Note that this filling will separate over time so just be sure to reheat and stir before using.  You'll love the aroma, the flavor, the freshness of this filling.   You can even use it as topping for vanilla ice cream,  or even an English muffin for breakfast!

    ENJOY! - The Recipe Wench

    Directions

    Step 1
Place chopped apples in large bowl.

Drizzle lemon juice and toss to mix. The lemon juice will prevent the apples from turning brown.

In large saucepan, add water, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Stir over medium heat until thick and bubbly.

    Add apples.

Continue stirring and cook for another 3 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

    Cool to room temperature.

At this point, you can either use the filling or store it in the freezer.

NOTE: this filling will separate over time. Before using be sure to reheat and stir to combine.
